The purpose of this weekly column by BCF is to show how Christians can interact with society and its pressures in a way that is consistent with Jesus’ message of selflessness.
The world around us is becoming increasingly focused on either pleasing or drawing attention to self. For example, we are encouraged to feel entitled to certain privileges. Advertising tells us that we deserve certain luxuries. Social media has become an outlet for us to say “Look at me!” Even my personal email address domain was recently switched to “me.com,” enticing me to think that, yes, it is all about me after all!
All these things are the exact opposite of what Jesus taught.“ Whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake, he is the one who will save it” (Luke 9:24). This is a great paradox, but is also a deep spiritual truth. Feeding my own desires may bring short-term pleasure, but in the long run usually breeds pain and disappointment. Taking the focus off of myself is ultimately the way to peace and contentment.
Admittedly, a blog about selflessness is a dangerous column to write. Talking about selflessness is like talking about humility—thinking that you have achieved it is an indication that you have not. Thankfully, Jesus (and not the blog writer) is the example of selflessness.
From week to week, we will see examples of this very thing, as we look at the connections between society, selflessness, and the Scriptures. As we look at the Scriptures as they apply to daily life, we will see how powerful and hopeful a life of God-inspired selflessness can be.
